National People’s Power has established control in the Colombo Municipal Council by nominating Vrai Cally Balthazar as the Mayor, according to Minister of Agriculture, Lands, Livestock, and Irrigation, K.D. Lalkantha. He made this announcement today (28) in Kandy.
The Minister stated that the official declaration of the appointments will be announced soon.
Speaking to the media in Kandy, Minister Lalkantha said:
“We have no issue with institutions where more than 50% of the seats have been won. In such cases, there is no problem in appointing the Mayor, Deputy Mayor, Chairman, and Vice Chairman. Next, we focus on local government institutions where a single party has won the majority.
“We have secured a majority of members in these councils as a single party. In some instances, even when all the members representing the new opposition party are combined, their numbers do not exceed ours.
“We have the democratic right to establish power in these councils. The people have given us that right, not anyone else. If we hold the majority and others attempt to take control of these assemblies, it goes against democratic principles. According to democracy, we establish power while involving others in every institution where we hold a majority,” the Minister said.
