Vasu, Wimal and Udaya to oppose Eastern terminal deal at cabinet tomorrow

It is reported that Ministers Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Wimal Weerawansa and Udaya Gammanpila have decided to oppose the proposal to enter into a joint venture project with an Indian company for the Eastern Terminal of the Colombo Port at the Cabinet meeting to be held tomorrow (Monday).

The decision was taken at a meeting held yesterday led by Wimal Weerawansa and representatives of 10 pro-government parties.

It has been decided to express the objections of the other parties to the government as only the above three ministers represent the cabinet among the party representatives who participated in this meeting.

In addition to the SLFP, the Jathika Nidahas Peramuna, Lanka Sama Samaja Party, Pivithuru Hela Urumaya, Democratic Left Front, Ceylon Workers Congress, Sri Lanka Mahajana Party, Eelam People’s Democratic Party, Communist Party and Dr. Gunadasa Amarasekara and MP Gevindu Kumaratunga were also present.

During the discussion chaired by Minister Wimal Weerawansa, it was decided to focus on the development of the Western Terminal by foreign investors instead of the Eastern Terminal of the Port.

Its purpose is to persuade government parties to implement the document, which also contains President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa’s vision of prosperity that the Western Terminal should be handed over to foreign investors.
