Two-thirds uncertain – 20th Amendment

The Samagi Jana Balawewa, the National People’s Power and the Tamil National Alliance have decided to oppose the repealing of the 19th Amendment to the Constitution.

Meanwhile, the Sri Lanka Freedom Party, one of the main parties in the ruling party, has also objected to the complete abolition of the 19th Amendment and has decided to submit a proposal to the government that should be included in the 20th Amendment, which includes the merits of the amendment.

According to the composition of the parliament, Samagi Jana Balawegaya has 54 members, the National People’s Power has 3, the TNA has 10 and the SLFP has 15 members thus making it doubtful if the government can get the two thirds needed to abolish the 19th amendment.

Although the first task of the current government is to repeal the 19th Amendment and pass the 20th Amendment by a two-thirds majority in Parliament, a covert operation has now been launched to bring in minority parties and several other MPs to help the government secure the majority needed.
