Tragedy Strikes as Sixteen-Year-Old Student Dies During Marathon Race

A marathon race organized by the Ampara Thirikkovil Methodist Mission Tamil Maha Vidyalaya for school sports took a tragic turn when a sixteen-year-old student participating in the event lost his life.

According to the Thirikkovil Police, the victim, identified as Jay Vidushan, a resident of Dore Appa Road, Thirikkovil No. 03, collapsed during the marathon race today (11). Despite immediate medical attention, Vidushan experienced difficulty breathing and was rushed to Thirikkovil Base Hospital around 7:30 am. As his condition deteriorated, he was subsequently transferred to Akkareipattu General Hospital by ambulance. Unfortunately, Vidushan succumbed to his condition and passed away around 12:30 pm at Akkareipattu General Hospital.

The news of Vidushan’s untimely death sent shockwaves through the community. Allegations arose regarding the alleged negligence of the health staff at Thirikkovil Hospital, leading to outrage among the victim’s family, school students, parents, and former students.

In response, a protest erupted in front of Thirikkovil Base Hospital, blocking the main road of Colombo-Batticaloa A4 for six hours. Approximately 500 individuals participated in the protest, during which demonstrators reportedly threw stones at Thirikkovil Primary Hospital. Law enforcement authorities, including the police and special task forces, were called in to restore order and manage the situation.
