The charge sheet relating to the allegations leveled against the Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police, Deshbandu Tennakoon, for handing down an illegal order to the OIC Fort police station regarding the money found in the president’s house by the protestors has been dispatched to the secretary to the ministry of Law and Order and the Police Commission.
The protestors that occupied the president’s house during the final push before ousting President Gotabaya Rajapaksa from his position found the stashed money and handed it over to the OIC Fort police.
Informed sources said that arrangements have been made to send a copy of the related charge sheet to the Magistrate’s Court, which is currently investigating the money found in the president’s house.
On July 9, 2022, when the activists took over the President’s House, this money was found stashed in a room, and the activists counted the amount and arranged to hand over the money to the Fort police.
However, it was stated that the Deputy Inspector General of Police had directed the Fort Police to hand over the money to the Minister in charge of Public Security, Tiran Alas, without bringing it to the notice of the court.
Nevertheless, the matter became a subject of investigation before the court.
Accordingly, the Fort Magistrate had also issued orders to the Inspector General of Police to investigate the allegation and report the facts to the court.
Subsequent to the order, the Special Investigation Unit of the Inspector General of Police has conducted an inquiry, and a charge sheet has been prepared against Deshabandu Tennakon.
Police sources revealed that in addition to this, another charge sheet is being prepared against the Western Province Senior Deputy Inspector General for failing to take steps to prevent the Easter Sunday attack
