Dr Mahendra Senaviratne, director of the Nuwara Eliya base hospital, said that a preliminary investigation revealed that the cause was the presence of germs in the eye drops used.

He reveals that patients who underwent eye surgery returned to the hospital with complete loss of vision within days of going home.

The hospital director said that the patients are currently receiving treatment and that their condition has improved by 30 percent.

He expressed confidence that they will be in good condition when the current treatment is over.

The hospital director has informed the Ministry of Health about the incident. The ministry has said that an investigation will be conducted into the incident, and the company that brought the drug to Sri Lanka has also been informed.

A week ago, all operations at the Colombo Eye Hospital were temporarily suspended due to contaminated eye drops.
