Suraksha Insurance scheme for school children canned?

Insurance company directed not to accept applications

Former MP Lakshman Kiriella has accused the government of scrapping the Suraksha insurance scheme announced by the former government to benefit nearly 4.5 million school children in the country. According to Kiriella, the relevant insurance company has been directed to not accept any new applications for the scheme.

Kiriella revealed this at a press conference held in Kandy yesterday (31). According to him as the contract signed with the company and the government of Sri Lankan lapsed yesterday, the company had been informed to not accept any new applications going forward.

However, according to the Ministry of Education officials, this has been brought to the notice of the cabinet. The decision will be left to the cabinet to decide the eventual fate of the insurance scheme and its continuance.
