The Supreme Court issued an order yesterday (27) to initiate the process of filling 4,718 vacancies in the third grade of Sri Lanka’s Principal Service.
These appointments were originally made based on an agreement reached before the Supreme Court for candidates who had successfully passed an examination held in 2019.
The Supreme Court’s decision came as a response to several fundamental rights petitions filed concerning new appointments in the third grade of Sri Lanka’s Principal Service.
The case was heard before a Supreme Court bench composed of Chief Justice Jayantha Jayasuriya, Janak de Silva, and Shiran Gunaratne.
Deputy Solicitor General Nirmalan Wigneswaran, representing the Attorney General, expressed readiness to settle the petition and noted that the Public Service Commission had advised the Governor to fill vacancies in the Principal rank. He also pointed out that 7,319 candidates had successfully passed the examination held on February 19, 2019, for Principal appointments.
The Deputy Solicitor General highlighted that an agreement had been reached before the Supreme Court on June 20, 2021, to make the relevant appointments to these candidates. The lawyers representing the petitioners concurred with these developments.
Consequently, the bench ordered the Ministry of Education to take the necessary steps to fulfill these appointments as per the agreement and previous court rulings.
