SSP Shani Abeysekara’s Wife Writes To CJ and AG On Threats To His Life

Former CID Director SSP Shani Abeysekara’s wife, Kamani Abeysekara has written to the Chief Justice and the Attorney General on the possible threats to her husband’s life. Abeysekara is currently incarcerated at the Mahara Remand Prison over allegations of fabricating evidence.

In her letter Kamani Abeysekara noted that even prior to her husband’s arrest on July 31 he had many death threats and other threats to harm him from various parties and authorities after authorities had taken steps to remove his security provided by the Police. She also noted that ASP Neville de Zoysa and IP Jagath Nishantha, two police officers attached to the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) investigating the allegations, had pressured a witness to give false evidence against her husband.

Kamani in her letter raised concerns about the death of underworld figure Makandure Madhush’s death at the hands of the same CCD officers and also about the allegedly false statements made by Senior DIG Deshabandu Tennekoon claiming SSP Shani Abeysekara had links to underworld activities in the country.

“My husband is a respected police officer who has successfully investigated 35 murderers and members of the underworld and brought them to justice.” she noted.

Noting that her husband had investigated the 2012 Welikada Prison massacre which saw action being taken against an offending Prisons Officer and a Police Officer, Kamani said she believes keeping her husband under the control of prison officers and police officers who are currently under investigation as a threat to his life.

“Therefore, his unsafe imprisonment in this way is a sabotage of the results of his investigations, which may also allow some powerful people to harm his life.” she said.

“Accordingly, considering the above, I believe that my husband is facing serious threats to his life. He risked his life for 30 years to carry out his professional duties with great responsibility, regardless of family members, to bring justice to the citizens of this country.  Therefore, it is the responsibility of the government to protect the life of my husband and the government should take all necessary steps to prevent his life from being harmed. Therefore, I humbly request you to take all possible and necessary steps to prevent the killing of my husband inside or outside the prison and to safeguard his life” she added.
