Sitha Ranjani , a fearless voice who raised her voice for media freedom in Sri Lanka for over three decades, and a founding member as well as a former convener of the independent media movement, passed away today (17). She was 71 years old at the time of her death. Sitha Ranjani, who lived unmarried, passed away after a long battle with cancer while undergoing treatment.

Born on March 8, 1954, in the Perimiyankulama area of Anuradhapura, Sitha Ranjani was the eldest of six siblings in her family.
She was an active member of the media field for over 37 years.
With a wide range of talents as a radio and newspaper journalist, writer, editor, and social activist, she particularly made significant contributions for peace and national reconciliation. During the presidency of R. Premadasa, she worked as an inaugural member of the free media movement, and she also served as a journalist for the ‘Justice’ weekend tabloid published by the Merge organization.
