Today 26, December Sri Lanka commemorates Its worst natural disaster Tsunami .
On December 26, 2004, a powerful earthquake struck off the coast of North Sumatra, Indonesia, triggering a devastating tsunami that affected several countries, including Sri Lanka.
More than 35,000 people lost their lives in Sri Lanka, over 5,000 people went missing, and extensive damage was caused to property.
In remembrance of the victims, December 26 has been observed as National Safety Day every year since 2005.
Accordingly, the National Safety Day commemoration ceremony is being held today (26) from 8:30 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Paraliya Tsunami Memorial in Galle.
Meanwhile, the Disaster Management Centre stated that several religious programmes have also been organised at the district level.
The Disaster Management Centre has requested the public to observe a two-minute silence from 9:25 a.m. to 9:27 a.m. today in memory of those who lost their lives in the disaster.
Meanwhile, the Railway Department has arranged to operate a special train from Maradana Railway Station to Matara at 6:30 a.m. today to commemorate the train accident that occurred when the tsunami struck the Paraliya area.
