Following the shooting in Soysapura recently the government has turned its focus on suppressing the underworld in Sri Lanka.
Accordingly, a specialized Police team has been formed for the purpose. Sources said officers with experience in handling the underworld has been gathered from across the island to form the new team.
The team is set to be led by Colombo North DIG Waruna Jayasundara. Jayasundara has previously led the Intel and Ops Divisions of the Special Task Force (STF). At the time the STF was actively involved in curbing the underworld.
The government has turned its focus on the issue after it was revealed that a politician was supporting the group involved in the Soysapura incident. It has also been revealed that its leader Kudu Anju is functioning from Dubai and is also involved in drug smuggling. Recently Kudu Anju had issued death threats to ASP Mount Lavinia and his family over the arrest of one of his henchman.
