Sri Lanka plans to import one million eggs daily from India!

Sri Lanka plans to import one million eggs from India and three government officials have left for India to inspect the country’s poultry farms, says the Chairman of the State Trading Corporation Asiri Walisundara.

Although Sri Lanka gets eggs from three Indian farms the amount it is insufficient to full fill the demand the Chairman further said. With the big shortage of eggs in the market the government has planned to import one million eggs on a daily basis. In order to observe the quality of these farms officials are on an inspection tour to selected farms located in Chennai, India. Once they returned to the island on Sunday and follow their recommendations action will be taken to import eggs, The Chairman further said.

However, commenting on the move, All Ceylon Egg Producers Association President Sarath Rathnayake said that when local egg production is in a rapidly production increasing period, the government is considering to further importing eggs spending foreign currency is not acceptable. He further said that Sri Lanka currently suffers with 5 Lakhs eggs per day but within 03 months the shortfall will be wiped out with the increase in production. He further pointed out that currently, the daily egg production increased by 25,000 eggs.
