Sri Lanka’s Criminal Investigation Department (CID) recorded a statement from Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) Parliamentarian Mujibur Rahuman for nearly four hours following the discovery of 53 telephone calls exchanged between him and a suspected drug trafficker currently in remand custody.
The calls were uncovered during an ongoing investigation after authorities discovered a mobile phone in the possession of the inmate, who is allegedly linked to narcotics trafficking. A detailed examination of the device revealed the communications.
The development has raised concerns over possible links between the opposition MP and underworld figures involved in drug-related activities. Rahuman has reportedly denied any improper connection, with some reports suggesting that he contacted the individual in an attempt to advise him against continuing drug-related operations.
The incident comes amid heightened scrutiny over alleged links between politicians and organized crime in Sri Lanka. The CID is continuing investigations into the matter.
