Moves underway to replace Nandalal with Indrajit?

Central Bank in a professional dilemma

Speculation is rife that certain moves are underway to replace the current Governor of the Central Bank, Dr Nandalal Weerasinghe, with Dr Indrajit Coomaraswamy.

The reason could be a longstanding political fallout between the Prime Minister and the Governor of the Central Bank. However, Dr Weerasinghe is known to be a professional in the banking sector who has discharged his duties with professional finesse upholding etiquette.

Internal sources say that during the yahapalana administration, there ought to have been professional fallouts between Dr Weerasinghe and Arjuna Mahendran and separately with Indrajit Coomaraswamy also, though many were not privy to those.

Dr Weerasinghe, domiciled in Australia, accepted the position on an invitation of the President when the country was gasping for breath economically.

Meanwhile, two factions are grappling with each other, one to maintain the status quo and the other to install the former Governor Coomaraswamy.

Coomaraswamy is a member of the committee appointed to negotiate with the International Monetary Fund.
