Professor Ven Dhammadinna thero to surrender to the courts at the instance of the Police

Moves are afoot to arrest Professor Ven. Hendalagamuwe Dhammadinna Thero, Head of the Chinese Language, Department of Modern Languages, University of Kelaniya, on seven charges relating to the May 9 incidents in the country.

Police sources said that they had informed Prof.Ven. Dhammadinna Thero to surrender to the police failing, which they may use force to arrest him.

Minister Prasanna Ranatunga, following an inspection of the burnt house, alleged that a Buddhist monk and a priest were at the scene when the house was on fire.

Minister Ranatunge’s house went in flames on the night of May 9.

Residents in the area say that they are preparing to arrest Ven. Dhammadinna Thera by filing charges based on Minister’s statement.

Police have asked the Nayaka Thera to surrender on Saturday or face arrest.

Prof.Ven. Hendalagamuwe Dhammadinna Thero stated the indications were that the Police would charge him with seven counts. The monk said he was not aware of what the charges were’

He also said he had no intention of flouting the law of the land. He said he would surrender to a court following Monday on the advice of a lawyer.

Meanwhile, a protest will be held in front of the clock tower in Minuwangoda this evening (26) to protest against the move to arrest Prof. Hendalagamuwe Dhammadinna Thero.
