The Geological Survey’s Early Tsunami Warning Center said that a powerful earthquake to hit Sri Lanka after 11 years was recorded in the sea near Sri Lanka at 11.14 am today in the Panama Sea off Ampara.
The quake, measuring 4.0 on the Richter scale, occurred 14 km east of the mouth of the Kumbukkan Oya estuary.
The epicentre was reported 10 kilometres below the seafloor. A previous earthquake in 2009 had a magnitude of 4.5 on the Richter scale.
However, the Geological Survey and Mines Bureau’s Early Tsunami Warning Unit said no tsunami alert was issued for the quake.
