FR petition against first female DIG to be taken up tomorrow

The petition filed by 14 SSPs including Ruwan Gunasekara and Jaliya Senaratne challenging the appointment of Sri Lanka’s first woman DIG Bimshani Jayasinghe Arachchige is due to be heard in the Supreme Court tomorrow.

She was appointed as the first female DIG in October last year based on a decision by the National Police Commission. She currently heads the Welfare Division of the Sri Lanka Police.

The 14 SSPs had previously stated that there was no position for a female DIG in the official hierarchy and that the appointment was made by the National Police Commission on the recommendation of the IGP in violation of the standard procedure.

They had filed a petition in the Supreme Court against the appointment, claiming that it has been detrimental to them. The petition will be taken up tomorrow.
