Opposition mounts against 20A : More petitions filed

Four more petitions against the 20A draft bill were filed today before the Supreme Court bringing the total to six. Leader of the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) R. Sampanthan filed a petition against the draft bill. A separate petition was filed by the Samagi Jana Balawegaya’s General Secretary Ranjith Madduma Bandara as well.

The SJB claimed that certain clauses of the 20th Amendment bill proposed by the government violate a number of fundamental rights and other provisions guaranteed by the current Constitution.

Yesterday (22) Attorney-at-Law Indika Gallage through Attorney-at-Law Dharshana Weraduwage also lodged a special application claiming that the draft bill requires a public referendum to be passed as it violates basic rights.

The draft bill of the 20th Amendment to the Constitution was tabled at the Parliament yesterday (22) amidst the protests of the Opposition.
