Officials prevent tuition teachers meet and greet of Kandy SLPP candidate

Election officials and the Police had recently halted a meet and greet of tuition teachers organized in support of a Kandy district candidate of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna from taking place. According to sources, the meeting and dinner for the teachers had been organized on Wednesday at a popular hotel on the Deveni Rajasinghe Mawatha.

While it had been promoted as being organized by the tuition teachers, in reality, it had been organized by the candidate himself. It had been informed to the Election Commission and the Police by another person resulting in the officials arriving at the venue on the day.

The candidate had been at the venue when the officials arrived. The officials had then said the activities at the event not only violated the elections laws but also the guidelines set to curb Covid 19 and therefore it must be halted.

While the candidate had first refused to not hold the event, he had then left the venue bringing the event to a halt. However, sources said the tuition teachers have been promoting the candidate in their classes and asking their students to tell their parents to cast a preferential vote to the candidate.

It has also been reported that it was a candidate from the SLPP contesting from the district and the same seat itself who had complained to officials against the candidate and the event.
