The National People’s Power (NPP) submitted a written complaint to the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) last night (May 4), requesting an immediate investigation into a false statement made by Thusitha Halloluwa, the former Executive Director of the Lottery Board. Halloluwa had falsely claimed that President Anura Kumara Dissanayake had made a large investment in Greece.

Attorney-at-Law Akalanka Ukwatte filed the complaint with the CID yesterday morning (May 4), under the instructions of President Dissanayake, who is currently on an official visit to Vietnam.

Following a notice from the CID, President’s Counsel Upul Kumarapperuma submitted a full written statement on behalf of the complainant to the CID at midnight.

Attorney Akalanka Ukwatte stated that making such a blatant false statement, especially on the eve of an election, constitutes a serious offense. He emphasized that the false claim was made in a way that aimed to damage the public’s trust and affection toward the President.

“The malicious false statement made by Thusitha Halloluwa against the leader of the National People’s Power, Anura Kumara Dissanayake, has been widely circulated by social media users, seriously harming his reputation,” Ukwatte said.

“We filed a complaint with the CID this morning regarding the false statement. Following that, we were notified that the CID required a written statement, which we have now provided,” he added.

“We believe that starting tomorrow, the CID will take the necessary legal action concerning both the origin of the false claim and the individuals who spread it through social media,” Attorney Ukwatte concluded.
