Namal and Mahinda Rajapaksa to Sit Out 2024 General Election; Wimal Weerawansa’s NFF Also Withdraws

In a significant political development ahead of Sri Lanka’s 2024 general election, internal sources from the Sri Lanka Podu Jana Peramuna (SLPP) have revealed that both former President Mahinda Rajapaksa and his son, Namal Rajapaksa, will not be contesting in the upcoming election. Mahinda Rajapaksa, the leader of SLPP, has yet to submit his nomination and has made a firm decision not to participate in this election.

Namal Rajapaksa, the national organizer of the SLPP, has also opted not to contest in the election. Instead, he plans to secure a seat in Parliament through the national list, bypassing direct electoral competition. According to senior party officials, this decision is part of a broader strategy to maintain Namal Rajapaksa’s influence across multiple districts, given the significance of this year’s general election for the party’s future.

In his place, former Member of Parliament D.V. Chanaka will lead the SLPP’s campaign in the Hambantota district, a stronghold of the Rajapaksa family.

Meanwhile, another political shift emerged as Wimal Weerawansa, leader of the National Freedom Front (NFF) and a former MP, announced that neither he nor his party will contest the forthcoming general election. According to Weerawansa, this decision came after extensive discussions within the NFF at all levels. He indicated that the party would soon release a formal statement outlining its position on how the political process and electoral divisions should unfold.

Weerawansa also addressed speculation about potential opposition efforts to support President Anura Dissanayake, cautioning that the NFF will not support any moves that could lead to political instability or further crisis in the country, referencing concerns about comparisons to the leadership of former President Gotabhaya Rajapaksa.

These developments mark a pivotal moment in Sri Lanka’s political landscape as the country heads into a critical election, with key figures opting to take a backseat and significant questions arising about the future direction of the nation’s leadership.
