Members of Parliament who are doctors by profession and represent the government have strongly objected to the decision to enroll local medical students in the Kotelawala Defence University (KDU) Medical Faculty, political sources said. Their protest prompted the government to withdraw the decision, despite the enrollment having already been advertised.
After learning about the university’s plan to enroll local students on a payment basis, the doctor MPs gathered in Parliament last Thursday and decided to push for an immediate withdrawal of the decision, Lankasara learns.
In light of the strong opposition, Deputy Minister of Security, Major General Aruna Jayasekera, informed Parliament that the decision to enroll local students had been suspended. He added that only cadets and foreign students would be admitted to the faculty.
Sources further revealed that the decision to admit local students to KDU was made by a certain group without informing the National People’s Power (NPP) leadership.
At the time of the discussion, Minister of Health Dr. Nalinda Jayatissa was on an overseas tour. The doctor MPs plan to discuss the issue with him now that he has returned to Sri Lanka following an official visit to Geneva.
