The major factory fire in the west of Melbourne will burn for several days as firefighters struggle to bring it under control. Authorities have warned communities to remain indoors as toxic smoke covers the entire area.
50 trucks deployed
According to Fire and Rescue Victoria (FRV), 180 firefighters and more than 50 trucks are responding to the large chemical explosion that occurred on Wednesday morning. Police stated that there have been no reports of injuries, and everyone inside the premises. It is believed to have evacuated safely.
The Deputy Commissioner of Fire Rescue Victoria, Michelle Cowling, warned that the size of the fire and the warehouse were making it hard for her crews to bring it under control. According to the Deputy Commissioner, fuel drums inside were exploding and launching into the air, making it dangerous for emergency services and residents.
Residents were advised to remain indoors due to toxic smoke
Meanwhile, a major freeway in Melbourne has been closed, and residents were advised to remain indoors as toxic smoke from the “significant” factory fire billows over parts of Melbourne. Speaking to the media, the Deputy Commissioner said they are not aware of what is in the smoke and assume it is toxic and could cause damage.
According to officials, residents near the incident have been evacuated as a precautionary measure. Local reports also revealed that the factory is located near a gas pipeline. However, emergency services have not issued any alerts regarding whether there is a risk of worsening the situation.
In October, a factory fire occurred on the same street, resulting in the death of one individual. However, there has been no official statement so far on what caused the current fire or whether there are health hazards following this explosion, as it is believed the factory contains harmful chemicals that have the potential to create significant damage to the community around the area.
