The Association of Medical Specialists (AMS) has raised serious concerns over what it described as “virulent attacks” on doctors performing complex medical and surgical procedures, following adverse comments made by non-technical individuals in various forums and highlighted widely in mainstream and social media.
In a statement issued recently, the AMS noted that these open criticisms – often made without any expert medical analysis – have created significant doubt about the country’s healthcare system and increased anxiety among patients awaiting or undergoing vital treatment.
“The image of medical specialists and the healthcare system in general is being tarnished by these unverified public comments,” the AMS said. It further warned that such criticism has led to targeted social media attacks against specialists who are performing lifesaving procedures, sometimes under resource constraints.
The association urged the Ministry of Health to conduct a thorough investigation into these incidents highlighted in the media and to release an expert technical report urgently. “It is of paramount importance that the government publishes the truth under these circumstances in order to relieve the doubts and anxiety of patients,” the AMS emphasised.
Medical specialists, the statement added, continue to render a “yeoman service” across the country, and public confidence in them is essential for timely and effective treatment outcomes.
