A Mawlavi has been arrested in Machole, Batticaloa, Sri Lanka, while transporting two T56 firearms, 60 rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and a pair of binoculars.
The arrest was made by the Aralaganwila Police Special Task Force (STF) following a tip-off received by the Army Intelligence Division in Polonnaruwa.
According to the STF, the suspect was transporting the firearms and other items on a motorcycle.
The arrested Mawlavi is a 43-year-old resident of the Otamawadi Manchole area, who was engaged in a large-scale dried fish business, the Special Task Force said.
Prior to transportation, the T56 firearms, 60 rounds of ammunition, two magazines, and the binoculars were put in a gunny bag and buried in the suspect’s garden.
The purpose of transporting the firearms and ammunition is under investigation. The STF stated that the suspect will be handed over to the Colombo Terrorism Investigation Division on the 31st for further investigation.
