Man sentenced to death for drug smuggling after 20 year court case

Galle High Court Judge WPS Nissanka today (12) sentenced to death a man convicted after possessing 382 grams of heroin in a drug possession and trafficking case that lasted almost 20 years.

The death sentence was handed down to a 51-year-old resident of Gonamulla, Kurunduwatta.

The suspect was arrested on May 5, 2001, with 382 grams of heroin by the Narcotics Bureau. He was 31 years old at the time.

He was indicted in the Galle High Court for possession and trafficking of drugs. The verdict was handed down today (12) after a 20-year long trial.
