A man has died in a tragic incident at Milan Bergamo Airport after reportedly breaking through security and being sucked into an aircraft engine.
The incident occurred at around 10.20am local time on Tuesday, leading to the suspension of all flights for nearly two hours at Italy’s third-busiest airport.
According to reports, the man, believed to be a 35-year-old local resident, arrived at the airport without a ticket. After abandoning his car, he entered the terminal and managed to bypass security barriers, gaining access to the baggage delivery area before running directly onto the tarmac.
Two border police officers chased him but were unable to stop him before he reached an aircraft that was preparing for take-off.
Airport operator Sacbo confirmed that an incident had forced the suspension of all operations. Flights bound for Bergamo have been diverted to Milan Malpensa Airport until further notice.
Authorities are yet to release official details on how the man managed to breach security and reach the aircraft, but preliminary reports suggest he deliberately threw himself into the aircraft turbine.
Milan Bergamo Airport is a major hub for travellers visiting the Italian fashion capital and northern tourist regions. Investigations are ongoing into the security breach and the exact circumstances of the fatal incident.
