Mahamaya College in Kandy has been closed indefinitely following growing concerns over a potential landslide risk in the surrounding area.
School Principal Shashikala Senadhira said the decision was taken after assessments revealed instability along several sections of Rajapihilla Mawatha located above the school premises. Although the school had reopened on the 16th, authorities opted to suspend operations indefinitely in the interest of student and staff safety.
She noted that a team from the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) had inspected Rajapihilla Mawatha and warned that the stretch above the school was vulnerable to landslides due to prevailing rainy conditions.
The elevated terrain above Mahamaya Balika Vidyalaya, extending up to Rajapihilla Mawatha, contains several hotels and residential properties. Officials cautioned that any landslide in this area could trigger the collapse of structures downhill, posing a serious threat to the school buildings below.
