Former UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya had applied for the leadership of the UNP, but it was rejected at the Working Committee meeting yesterday (25) due to a legal issue arising from the UNP constitution.

UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has pointed out that if anyone applies for the leadership of the UNP, he should have represented the working committee, the parliamentary group and the executive council in accordance with the party constitution.

The Working Committee meeting commenced at around 3.15 pm yesterday (25) under the chairmanship of party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Inaugurating the meeting, Ranil Wickremesinghe said that a proposal had been made to appoint former Speaker Karu Jayasuriya as the UNP leader. However, the party leader Ranil Wickremesinghe stated that if he is appointed as the leader, a number of constitutional issues will arise.

However, a number of suggestions were made that Karu Jayasuriya should be appointed as the UNP leader. Ravi Karunanayake stood up and said that Karu Jayasuriya was a good Buddhist leader and that a good Sinhala Buddhist community base could be built under his leadership. Therefore, by appointing him, the UNP Ravi Karunanayake pointed out how a good reorganization can be achieved within the UNP.
