Kadugannawa Municipal Council Chairman Amila Weragoda was arrested by the CID today (24).
Investigations have been launched against him for allegedly forging documents, forging passports and trafficking the widows of LTTE cadres abroad.
At the outset of the investigation into the allegations against him, it was revealed that a fraudulent document had been submitted to the Department of Immigration and Emigration which had changed the official name of the Chairman of the Municipal Council to Mayor and how the relevant passport had been prepared using that document.
Central Province Local Government Commissioner Menaka Herath transferred the then Secretary of the Municipal Council to another institution for assisting him in compiling this fraudulent document In May of that year.
The Chairman was summoned to the CID today (24) to make a statement regarding the incident.

Residents of Kadugannawa and opposition politicians have lodged complaints with the Central Province Governor as well as the police regarding a number of fraudulent activities of the Chairman.
When inquired about this, the Deputy Chairman of the Kadugannawa Urban Council SK Wijeratne said that the Central Local Government Commissioner Menaka Herath had instructed him to assume duties as the Acting Chairman of the Municipal Council on the 25th as the Chairman had been arrested.
