Jeevan Thondaman, the 26-year-old son of late Minister and leader of the Ceylon Workers Congress (CWC) Arumugam Thondaman will be nominated to contest under the Sri Lanka Podhujana Peramuna (SLPP) ticket in the upcoming general election.

The CWC has requested Jeevan to be named for the vacant position in the list after Minister Arumugam Thondaman passed away suddenly on Tuesday (26) after suffering a heart attack. Prior to his demise Thondaman had handed over nominations to contest in the Nuwara Eliya district. After his death, the CWC had requested Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa to select Jeevan as his father’s replacement in the list.

The United Kingdom educated Jeevan is currently the youth wing leader of the CWC, founded by his great grandfather Saumyamurthy Thondaman.

Meanwhile, the final rites of Minister Arumugam Thondaman will be held on Sunday at the Norwood ground. The Minister was admitted to the Thalangama Divisional Hospital on Tuesday after suffering a heart attack at his home in Battaramulla. However, he was pronounced dead on arrival. The 55-year-old politician had a political career spanning 20 years and had held a number of important ministerial portfolios in consecutive governments.
