IRIS Dena Sailors Laid to Rest Alongside Top Security Chief Larijani

Mass funeral in Tehran honours navy sailors killed off Sri Lanka and senior leaders slain in Israeli airstrikes

A massive crowd gathered in Tehran to attend a state funeral for dozens of Iranian martyrs, including senior officials and navy personnel, in a ceremony that reflected the scale of the ongoing conflict.

The funeral notably brought together the remains of sailors from the Iranian Navy’s destroyer *IRIS Dena*, who were killed in a torpedo attack off the coast of Sri Lanka on March 4, along with high-ranking officials slain in recent Israeli airstrikes.

Among those honoured was Secretary of Iran’s Supreme National Security Council, Ali Larijani, who was killed alongside his son in an Israeli aerial attack in Tehran on March 17. The ceremony also paid tribute to Major General Gholam Reza Soleimani, commander of the Basij, who was reportedly killed in a separate airstrike by Israeli fighter jets.

The inclusion of the IRIS Dena sailors in the same funeral ceremony underscored the widening scope of hostilities, linking maritime and aerial confrontations across the region. Iranian officials and mourners highlighted the sailors’ deaths as part of what they described as coordinated aggression involving both the United States and Israel.

The IRIS Dena, a key vessel in Iran’s navy, was reportedly struck by a torpedo allegedly fired by a US Navy asset while operating in waters off Sri Lanka, resulting in significant casualties among its crew.

The mass funeral was attended by top officials, military personnel, and thousands of civilians from across the country, representing various segments of Iranian society. State media portrayed the gathering as a symbol of national unity and resilience in the face of escalating conflict.

According to Iranian reports, the United States and Israel launched a large-scale military campaign against Iran following the assassination of Supreme Leader Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei on February 28. The strikes have since targeted both military and civilian infrastructure, causing widespread destruction and loss of life.

In response, Iran has carried out retaliatory attacks, launching missiles and drones at what it described as American and Israeli positions in the region, further intensifying tensions.

The joint funeral ceremony, particularly the inclusion of sailors killed near Sri Lanka, has drawn attention to the broader geographical spread of the conflict, extending its impact far beyond Iran’s borders.
