National People’s Power’s Matara District Group leader, Sunil Handunnetti, recently recalled a Facebook post featuring a picture of him frying vada in the Matara market. The image, widely circulated after the party’s defeat in the 2020 general elections, became a source of encouragement and motivation for Handunnetti and his team in their journey toward a successful comeback.

“Thank you very much to the brother who posted that,” Handunnetti said during his speech at the main public rally of the National People’s Force, held at Matara Garden yesterday.

He also shared his vision for a more inclusive political representation:

“We are committed to providing the highest number of MP positions with a record of success. Our team includes representatives from all communities—Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims—to foster unity and mutual respect.”

Handunnetti highlighted the enduring commitment of the party’s supporters, who have remained steadfast without seeking privileges. Reflecting on the 2020 elections, he noted, “When we couldn’t secure even a single MP from Matara district, that picture of me frying vada on Facebook gave us renewed courage and strength. Many thanks to the brother who posted it.”

He further criticized his political opponents in the district, remarking, “Sixteen parties and seven independent groups are contesting in Matara, but none of them have established offices or held meetings. It’s all empty promises. Former cabinet ministers and their families struggle to engage with the public. The National People’s Power, however, has only just begun.”
