Gov requests channels to stop recording Covid patients

The Director-General of Government Information Nalaka Kaluwewa today released a statement requesting electronic media to not shoot footage of those positive for Covid 19 or persons being taken to be quarantined in violation of their privacy and social dignity.

Kaluwewa in the release noted that certain electronic media channels have been acting in a manner that harms the privacy of individuals who have tested positive for Covid 19 or who are being taken to be quarantined. He also pointed out that some media have portrayed these persons as anti-social elements through their negative coverage.

The release said such coverage does not make an effective contribution to the proper awareness among the public. It said that it would also discourage some persons from seeking treatment or being quarantined due to the invasion of their privacy.

“There has been a great deal of public displeasure and protest against this negative use of media” the release added. As a result, the Department has requested media channels to stop shooting and telecasting persons suspected of being Covid 19 positive or their homes.
