Members of the Government Medical Officers Association (GMOA) have split into two factions based on political affiliations, and both groups are now competing to attract members to their respective sides, sources revealed to Lankasara.
It has been reported that a specialist doctor currently holding a key position in the association—part of the faction led by Specialist Dr. Sanjeewa Tennakoon—has resigned from that group and joined the rival faction headed by Specialist Dr. Darshana Sirisena, who is vying to take over leadership of the association.
Sources say that Dr. Sirisena’s group has agreed to offer this specialist the same position he previously held within the GMOA.
To mark the shift, the specialist doctor hosted a ceremonial banquet on May 25, with the current Health Secretary, Specialist Dr. Anil Jasinghe, attending as the chief guest. Reliable sources indicate that political forces are influencing both factions and are behind the ongoing division.
The GMOA has a controversial history of political involvement. During the tenure of Specialist Dr. Anuruddha Padeniya, the association reportedly suppressed an opposing group that was also competing for control.
