Former Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe says that the no-confidence motion against Minister Udaya Gammanpila will strengthen the government and that what should be done today is not to bring a no-confidence motion against a minister but to file a no-confidence motion against the government.
Mr. Wickramasinghe made these remarks while participating in a Youtube interview with Chamudutha Samarawickrma and he further revealed that no other party in the opposition has signed the no-confidence motion brought by the Samagi Jana Balawewa against Minister Gammanpila.
Speaking further Mr. Wickremesinghe said that the increase in fuel prices was not a single decision of Minister Gammanpila but a joint decision of the President, the Prime Minister, and the Cabinet, and in such a situation bringing a no-confidence motion against only one person would turn into disunity between them.
He said that if he had been the Leader of the Opposition, he would never have taken such a decision, adding that he was waiting for the division of the government to intensify.
He has stated that he has no hope of joining the government or taking positions in the parliament as he is a member of the UNP and that he is a member of the opposition from the heart.
Mr. Wickremesinghe said that he had refused to accept the National List seat from the beginning and that he had decided to represent the party in Parliament due to the pressure of the party and the current crisis in the country.
He said the main purpose of his visit to parliament was to persuade the people affected by the coronavirus and the government to find a solution to the crisis caused by the disaster caused by the Express Pearl ship.
