Former LTTE cadre who attempted to make explosive device dies

A former LTTE cadre who sustained severe injuries when attempting to make a bomb and it exploded has died. The incident took place in Iyakachchi, Kilinochchi on July 3 at a house in the area. 

It was believed the former LTTE cadre had been attempting to make an explosive device ahead of the Black Tiger commemoration usually held on July 5 when the explosion took place. Following the explosion, he was admitted to the Kilinochchi Hospital and later transferred to the Anuradhapura Hospital as his condition deteriorated. However, he later succumbed to his injuries.

On investigation, the Police had found a banner and other material including three locally-made explosive devices, a photograph of an LTTE cadre and explosives. Others living at the residence have also been taken into custody including the wife of the man, a 43-year-old woman identified as a teacher. 

After questioning the suspects the Terrorism Investigations Division of the Police also arrested a 40-year-old man attached to the Civil Defence Force in the Kilinochchi areas who is believed to have been connected to the making of the explosive devices.
