Recent incidents surrounding Kandy Perahara’s elephant rampage have sparked various stories and speculations, particularly on social media. Some have even suggested that these incidents are part of an organized conspiracy against Sinhala Buddhist forces. However, a special discussion was held today (23) to reveal the truth and dispel these misconceptions.
During the discussion between the Perahara organizing committee, Elephant caretakers, and other stakeholders, the true incident that took place was revealed.
Ashoka Chandrasiri, an elephant caretaker closely associated with the Ratna elephant of the Galmadulla temple, shared his firsthand account of the incident.
According to Ashoka, Ratna, the 25-year-old elephant, was calmly participating in the Kataragama procession. As Ratna approached the entered Dalada Street, a child near the procession blew a kid’s toy pipe that expanded when blown. The sound startled the elephant, and the extended part of the pipe accidentally hit the elephant’s trunk, causing it to turn aside.
In the process, Ratna accidentally collided with another elephant from the Kataragama procession. This collision caused commotion among the elephants and their riders.
Ashoka clarified that no elephant attack took place, and the disturbance was primarily due to unexpected loud noises, horn blowing, and flashing lights from spectators capturing the procession on their mobile phones.
Pradeep Miyanapala, in charge of the elephants at Dalada Maliga, emphasized the importance of maintaining a calm environment during the processions. He confirmed that no elephants were harmed and that elephants were carefully monitored for their health conditions before participating in the event. Pradeep Miyanapala emphasized that the Kandy Perahera is a sacred festival and not a carnival.
In conclusion, the elephant rampage incident was not part of a conspiracy, but rather a result of unexpected loud noises and disturbances caused by some spectators.
