Electricity Minister Announces Plans to Reverse October Price Hike

Electricity and Energy Minister Kanchana Wijesekera revealed today (21) in Parliament, plans to completely reverse the percentage increase introduced in October through an upcoming amendment to the electricity bill.

Addressing the House, Minister Wijesekera conveyed the decision to eliminate the 18 percent price hike implemented across all electricity bills in the domestic category, including those for religious shrines. Additionally, he disclosed that the 12 percent increase levied on electricity bills for factories and hotels would be scaled back.

Furthermore, the Minister indicated reductions in the percentage adjustments for public works and government buildings. He affirmed the government’s commitment to providing relief to consumers, citing President’s guidance to prioritize measures that alleviate financial burdens during these challenging times.

Minister Wijesekera underscored the significance of the forthcoming amendment, which aims to mitigate the impact of rising electricity costs on households and businesses. He emphasized the government’s proactive stance in addressing the concerns of the public and ensuring equitable access to essential services.
