A significant discrepancy in Covid death figure between Police and DGHS

A significant discrepancy has been witnessed between the daily number of deaths collected by the police and the number of daily deaths reported by the Director-General of Health Services in Sri Lanka a police source said. According to this source wherever a death occurs in Sri Lanka, it is reported to the police, especially at a Covid death, it is being monitored by the public health inspectors as well recorded as in the police books.

This information is even presented at meetings regarding the epidemic, police said. The police have established a special Covid unit to act on pandemic-related actions.

The database of this particular unit contains details such as the name, age, address of each and every Covid death that occurs throughout the island.

Although it includes close relatives of the deceased as well as telephone numbers where they can be contacted, the inside information of the police states that there is a significant difference between the number of Covid deaths collected by the police and the Covid deaths issued by the health department on a daily basis.
