The Colombo Magistrate’s Court announced today (31), that the cause of death of prominent business leader Dinesh Shafter will be disclosed tomorrow (01), putting an end to the prolonged controversy and numerous suspicions that have arisen regarding this case.
In the midst of multiple contentious incidents, a five-member medical panel, comprising Sri Lanka’s most senior forensic doctors, was appointed by court orders to conduct a second post-mortem examination. The forensic report was presented to the court today (31), where Colombo Additional Magistrate Rajindra Jayasuriya received the sealed document and revealed that the cause of Shafter’s death would be officially disclosed tomorrow (01).
Relatives of the deceased submitted a motion to the court requesting permission for their legal representatives to address the matter following the reception of the expert report. However, the Additional Magistrate declined the request, clarifying that death investigations aim to determine the apparent cause of a person’s demise and do not permit external parties to provide evidence.
Consequently, the Additional Magistrate instructed the necessary arrangements for handing over Mr. Shafter’s remains, currently held at Karapitiya Hospital, to his family. Additionally, she ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to facilitate the burial at Jawatta Cemetery.
The Additional Magistrate expressed her gratitude to the expert medical committee for their support in conducting the investigation.\
