The doctor arrested by the Police yesterday after robbing nearly Rs. 8 Million from the National Hospital had done so due to being in debt, he has told the Police. On questioning the Doctor attached to the hospital had said he was in around Rs. 2.5 Million in debt and had carried out the robbery to pay it back.

It was revealed yesterday that the doctor who made away with the money intended to pay overtime payments to hospital staff was a  doctor who had been transferred to the Colombo National Hospital from another hospital for a postgraduate specialist trainee program. The Police said the doctor has no prior records of criminal offences.

Hospital sources revealed that the doctor had been drunk when carrying out the offence and that there is also evidence that he was being treated for depression. He was later arrested by two Police officers in Civvies and CI Waruni Bogahawaththa, the OIC of the Women and Children Bureau in Matara.
