Death at Independence Square problematic: Police to carry out an investigation

The death of the person who is believed to have committed suicide in the victinity of the independance square today morning (12) remains to be suspicious despite appearing to have been a suicide, Poice said. The victim identified as Rajeewa Jayaweera (65) a former Senior airlines official was found dead with a gunshot wound to his head. The weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was found underneath the body. Though evidence points to a suicide, the Police said a number of doubts have been raised about the death.

According to investigators Jayaweera had visited his brother yesterday (11) and left a briefcase in the house. He had then text his brother in the night after requested that he inspect the doucments in the case. He had also provided his brother with the code to open the case.

While the brother had opened the case according to the instructions, a letter written by Jayaweera found within had mentioned he had been ailing for sometime and that treatment was to no effect. In the letter therefore he had said he had decided to commit suicide as he no longer wished to live under those circumstances.

Alarmed his brother hadsearched for Jayaweera in his usual haunts and had then complained to the Bambalapitiya Police station.

The Police said however they will investigate further as the letter had not directly mentioned that he was to commit suicide and that how he would have obtained a weapon was also questionable.

The Police also noted that people often turn to methods much easier to be found around them to commit suicide and since he is not a member of the secuiy forces or known to use weapons the choice to commit suicide by shooting himself also raises some doubts.
