The driver of the crane involved in the fatal accident at Kanatta Junction, Borella, this morning (28), has tested positive for cannabis use. This was confirmed following a medical examination conducted on the suspect.
Seven individuals injured in the accident are currently receiving treatment at the Colombo National Hospital. One of the victims succumbed to injuries upon admission, according to Dr. Rukshan Bellana, Deputy Director of the hospital.
Dr. Bellana further stated that among the injured are two women and five men.
The accident occurred when a crane traveling from Rajagiriya towards Bauddhaloka Mawatha crashed into six motorcycles and three cars that were parked near the traffic lights at the Kanatta Roundabout.
The deceased has been identified as a 62-year-old man from Athurugiriya.
The crane driver has been arrested. Police suspect that the accident may have been caused by a brake failure.
Further investigations are being carried out by the Borella Police.
