Court dismisses Udayanga’s request on travel abroad!

 

A request made by the former Ambassador of Russia Udayanga Weeratunga through a motion to the Fort Court seeking permission to travel abroad has been refused by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage today.

Earlier, when Udanga Wiratunga was granted bail in connection with the case related to the MiG aircraft deal, the court took steps to ban his foreign travel.

Presenting a motion before the court today, the lawyer representing Udayanga Weeratunga stated that his client has to travel abroad to participate in an international trade conference, and that the relevant ban be temporarily relaxed.

However, the Criminal Investigation Department objected on his request citing since he was evading to the courts for a long time. Udayanga Weeratunge, who returned to the country after the new government returned to power in 2019 after avoiding the court in 2015.

According to the previous experience, the Criminal Investigation Department pointed out in the court that it is unlikely to return to Sri Lanka if the travel ban is eased.

The judge who considered this has rejected Udayanga Weeratunga’s request to go abroad.
