Consumers Warned About Chemically Tainted Grains and Substandard Coconut Oil in Market

The Association of Public Health Inspectors has issued a stern warning to the public, urging them to exercise caution when purchasing grains, particularly mung beans and peas, during the festive season. Concerns have been raised over the presence of chemical substances in these grains, rendering them unfit for human consumption.

Upul Rohana, the president of the Association of Public Health Inspectors, emphasized the grave risks associated with consuming grains treated with harmful chemicals. He revealed that certain unscrupulous traders resort to applying toxic substances to grains to prevent damage caused by insects. Such practices not only compromise the safety and quality of the grains but also pose serious health hazards to consumers.

Rohana further disclosed that samples of suspicious grains available in the market have been referred to government food inspectors for testing. Preliminary investigations have already commenced to identify the toxic chemicals present in these grains, with the aim of safeguarding public health and well-being.

In a bid to combat this alarming trend, Rohana underscored the importance of holding traders and manufacturers accountable for selling products contaminated with toxic chemicals. Stringent measures will be enforced to ensure that those responsible for endangering public health face legal consequences. Efforts will also be intensified to remove tainted food items from circulation, thereby preventing unsuspecting consumers from falling victim to harmful substances.

In addition to the contamination of grains, Rohana highlighted another concerning issue plaguing the market – the sale of substandard coconut oil. Investigations are underway to identify and eliminate coconut oil unfit for human consumption from the market. Swift action will be taken to confiscate and destroy such substandard products, thereby safeguarding the health and safety of consumers.

As the festive season approaches, the Association of Public Health Inspectors urges consumers to remain vigilant and discerning when purchasing food items.
