Chinese rice given to fishermen in Jaffna is being sold on the streets in Jaffna a weekend newspaper reports.
The rice, which was part of China’s humanitarian aid, is not being eaten because it is too sticky. Fisherfolk don’t like the taste compared to their rice varieties, so they are selling it at very low prices.
The aid also included prefabricated houses and fishing equipment for fishermen in the northern and eastern provinces. However, there are concerns about the prefabricated houses, which are made of metal and not suitable for the hot temperatures in the region. Fishermen are reportedly using these houses to store their fishing gear instead of living in them, and there have been incidents of the stored gear catching fire.
