The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Brussels hosted a unique cultural and gastronomic experience by organizing a “Ceylon Tea and Belgian Chocolate Pairing Workshop” at the Sri Lanka Residence. The event aimed to enhance the visibility of Ceylon tea in the Belgian market through a creative and innovative approach.
The elegant workshop brought together the rich heritage of world-renowned Ceylon tea and the artistry of Belgian chocolates. Guests were treated to a curated sensory journey, making the event a delight for tea and chocolate connoisseurs.
The event was organized in collaboration with Stijn Van Schoonlandt, owner of Kruze Tea Belgium. Mr. Schoonlandt is a certified Tea Master, international speaker, Regional Director for Europe at the International Tea Masters Association, and a member of the European Speciality Tea Association. The gathering included tea importers, distributors, specialty tea shop owners, tea sommeliers, chocolatiers, and tea enthusiasts from across Belgium.

Ambassador Chandana Weerasena warmly welcomed the guests and encouraged them to explore business and tourism opportunities in Sri Lanka. He highlighted the potential of partnering with Sri Lankan tea companies and discovering the country’s scenic tea trails.
Minister Commercial of the Embassy, Thavishya Mullegamgoda, delivered a presentation showcasing the exceptional diversity and key selling points of Ceylon tea. She invited attendees to experience the unique story behind each cup of Ceylon tea—from plantation to palate.
Mr. Schoonlandt led the workshop segment, presenting six distinctive varieties of Ceylon tea: mellow black tea, Ceylon bloom, cinnamon cigar, OP1, FBOPF SP, and spice chai. Each tea was thoughtfully paired with a selection of Belgian chocolates, including praline, white chocolate, milk chocolate, lime-infused chocolate, and dark chocolate.
Tea samples were provided by Sri Lankan tea exporters—Amba Estate, Bogawanthalawa Ceylon Tea (Pvt) Ltd, Kaley Tea Estate, and Rosyth Artisan Teas. These samples were featured in the pairings and displayed for guests to explore their unique flavours, aromas, and textures.
The event concluded with a discussion on future opportunities to expand the presence of Ceylon tea in Belgium. Guests enjoyed signature tea-chocolate pairings alongside Sri Lankan finger foods, creating a perfect finale to an immersive and memorable experience.
