Ceasefire Reached Between Hamas and Israel Amid Ongoing Violence in Gaza

Palestinians in Gaza are celebrating after mediators confirmed a ceasefire deal has been reached between Hamas and Israel following 15 months of conflict. The truce is scheduled to take effect on Sunday, January 19.
Despite the announcement, Israeli forces continue to carry out attacks across the Gaza Strip, killing at least 30 Palestinians since the agreement was disclosed.
Hamas official Izzat al-Risheq stated that the agreement, brokered in Doha, Qatar, fulfills all of the group’s demands, including the complete withdrawal of Israeli forces, the return of displaced residents to their homes, and a permanent cessation of hostilities.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu expressed gratitude to U.S. President Joe Biden and President-elect Donald Trump for their roles in facilitating the agreement, which he said aimed to relieve “the suffering of dozens of hostages and their families.”
The war in Gaza has resulted in at least 46,707 Palestinian deaths and 110,265 injuries since October 7, 2023. In the same period, 1,139 people were killed in Israel during the Hamas-led attacks, and over 200 were taken hostage.
